Asrah is Here!
“What is your identity? Can you define yourself in one word? And why does it matter?”
These are the questions that I was presented with when making Asrah for my Senior Capstone project. Being my last semester at Morgan State University, the plan was to travel to South Africa, interview Credo Mutwa and get a first hand account as to why the Zulu name is so prevalent around the world. My name is Sun Zulu because of this influence and this is the ultimate test for me to the core, or so I thought.
The process started back in November. For those that don’t know, I reconnected with my dude Mydus and Asrah is our first project since 2011. That’s 9 years! But honestly it felt like we picked right back up where we left off. Circumstances have been constantly changing but this project is the one sure thing that kept me level headed all this time.
What I learned about the Zulu and myself has actually blown my mind. Although I was unable to interview Baba Mutwa before his passing, I did get an interview with one of my teachers in SA. She really goes in depth on the concept of the “Subaltern” on Asrah’s interlude and I think that’s powerful on a project that is discussing identity. I got Skyzoo, Nyota Parker, Graveyard Shifter and more on this one project! They are some of the greatest emcees ever to me and that’s an honor 🙏🏾
I’ll go in depth about the creation of each song at a later date (and I don’t need to explain to y’all what this year is about. 2020 vision, for real.) Asrah, conceptually, has many layers but I did create a video to explain some of the questions. So, click the link or search our names on all DSPs because Asrah is AVAILABLE NOW‼️ We put our ALL into this and appreciate any support. Share this, tell people, show some love! Oh...and for those who actually read this, my name is Sun Zulu. I am an enigma. I’ve always found myself through music and although this is a personal account, If you relate I want you to vibe with me. Stay safe out there. 1-luv 🖤✊🏾
